The spring month of April does whatever it wants. This refers to the extreme temperature fluctuations in a month. We explain why this is the case here.
“April, April, he doesn’t know what he wants.” Everyone probably knows this saying. This primarily means a rapid succession of weather conditions in one day. However, this can also be extended over a longer period of time. April is a classic month of transition and especially now you can really experience the “battle of the air masses”.
This year the April weather is extreme. After summer feelings of almost 30 degrees in parts of Germany, winter cold is now rolling in. Even up to 50 cm of snow is expected in some cases:
The winter has caused a lot of ice to form in the polar regions, causing the layers of air above to cool down. Due to the higher position of the sun, the land mass in southern regions of the Northern Hemisphere can warm up considerably. In spring, both air masses meet exactly in our latitudes.
To compensate for the differences, low pressure areas form here and are responsible for the changeable weather. Depending on the flow, there can be large temperature fluctuations in a short period of time.
Only when the high latitudes continue to warm up as the sun gets higher will the paths of the low pressure areas shift towards the north. This means that the temperature and pressure differences become smaller and longer warm phases result. This stabilization is often noticeable as early as May.
