Summer temperatures await us in Germany on May 1, 2024. But strong thunderstorms could also threaten again. Winter transitions almost seamlessly into summer.
May is definitely starting off very warm this year, that’s already clear. Up to 28 degrees are possible in eastern Germany and in the rest of the country it is still between 20 and 25 degrees.
The reason for the summer values is the change in the overall weather situation. An omega high is forming over Eastern Europe and Germany is on the edge. So we’re getting warm air from the south again, while in Spain, for example, it remains too cold for this time of year. So while we can expect up to 28 degrees on Labor Day, the peak temperatures in Spain only reach 20 degrees.
However, there is still a certain degree of uncertainty regarding the thunderstorms and showers on May Day. It could remain quite sunny and dry in the east and southeast, while new clouds will appear in the north and west. Showers and even strong thunderstorms could also threaten there on May 1st. However, this cannot yet be predicted with certainty.
But we’re still really lucky with the temperatures this year. In the past five years – between 2023 and 2018 – the average temperature in Germany was not above 11 degrees.
But it probably won’t be enough to set a new temperature record this year. It was set up in Rheinau in Baden-Würtemberg in 2005 and is 31.1 degrees.
But we are still a long way from the coldest May Day in the history of measurements. If you do not count the mountain stations in Germany, the lowest temperature on May 1st was -10 degrees. In 1962, this frosty value was measured in Merklingen.
Of course, it looks even colder in the mountain stations: here the lowest value was -17.7 degrees on the Zugspitze, measured in 1942.
