Germany is regularly hit by storms. Read here how a thunderstorm forms and how best to behave when there is thunder and lightning.
Basically, thunderstorms occur when warm and cold air masses collide or when the temperature difference between the air layers in the atmosphere is particularly large. This happens more often in summer than in winter and more often in the south of Germany than in the north. To protect yourself, it is advisable to count the seconds between lightning and thunder and divide the number by three – then you will know how many kilometers away from you the thunderstorm is. If it is less than three kilometers, you should go to a house with a lightning rod or a closed car as a precaution. If you cannot reach an interior, the following applies: avoid water, do not ride a bike and do not use an umbrella.
