Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, himself an enthusiastic amateur racing cyclist, must have been in seventh heaven last Friday. For the first time, the country he will one day rule as successor to his mother, Queen Margrethe, co-hosted the Tour de France. The first three stages of the more than 2,400-kilometer journey lead through Denmark this year. The capital Copenhagen was the scene of the “Grand Départ”, the departure point, the 109th edition of what is probably the most famous stage race in professional road cycling in the world. The Tour de France has been held in July every year since 1903 and leads through France and neighboring countries in changing routes.
