Customs: Where the tradition of the maypole comes from

In many areas, especially in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Austria, the maypole is still put up on May 1st. A lot is part of the southern German custom – from decorating the maypole to stealing.

Putting up maypoles was forbidden in Christianity for a long time.

A lot usually happens before the maypole is finally beautifully decorated and celebrated by the community.
