After a serious train accident near Barcelona with one fatality and 86 injured, the authorities in Spain have started investigations.
An examining magistrate has been commissioned to deal with the case, the higher regional court of the Catalonia region said on Tuesday. When a suburban train collided with a freight train near Barcelona late Monday afternoon, the driver of the passenger train died. On Tuesday, the affected railway line west of Barcelona remained closed due to the recovery of the locomotives and wagons. The cause of the accident, which happened around 6 p.m., initially remained unknown.
According to the civil defense, 86 passengers suffered mostly minor injuries in the accident at the Sant Boi station. Nine of them had to be taken to hospitals, but they were all released on Tuesday, the Europa Press news agency reported, citing the authorities.
According to official information, the collision occurred when some of the wagons of the freight train derailed and collided with the oncoming passenger train on a parallel track as it exited the station.
