During the World Cup in Qatar, the DFB fan club will not be based in the host country, but in Dubai – and will travel to the games by plane. That causes criticism.
The World Cup in Qatar, which begins on November 21, is already ill-fated: many fans find the unusual winter date a thorn in their side, and the human rights situation in the host country is highly controversial. Most recently, even DFB director Oliver Bierhoff was critical of the award. For the DFB, however, a sustainability issue related to the World Cup could also bring bad PR.
Because the fans of the national team will travel long distances by plane to every game to support the DFB team. As the national team fan club announced, this time the joint accommodation will not be close to the team headquarters, and not even in the same country. Instead, the supporters will be based in Dubai and will fly 500 kilometers to and from each game.
DFB fan club: Accommodation in Qatar was “organizationally impossible”
Not exactly climate-friendly travel planning, even if the fan club made it clear that accommodation in Qatar was “organically not possible”. Nevertheless, the DFB receives a lot of criticism for this decision. “This wonderful sustainability. With the plane from the luxury hotel in the desert to the stadium in the desert, a dream,” annoyed a fan on Twitter. The German team will be based in Al-Ruwais on the north coast and will all play their group games against Spain, Costa Rica and Japan at the Al-Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.
The four-star hotel “La Quinta by Wyndham Dubai Jumeirah” can accommodate up to 300 members of the DFB fan club. The DFB offers six different travel packages for the World Cup. If you want to book into the hotel for the entire group phase, you pay at least 2609 euros for twelve nights. Tickets for national team matches are not included in the price.
